Star Athletes

When it comes to sports, a lot of speculation is involved: speculation about capability, performance and results.  Quarter Horse Racing is no different.  From the breeders to the betters, everyone is speculating about the potential of these super speed athletes.

For the owners, there is no sweeter victory than when your speculation is proven correct and your horse crosses the finish line with enough speed to qualify, or better yet, to win.

In 2024, Triple R Racing Stables LLC was blessed with two racehorses proving their betters to be right: Layer Cake and Bad King.

Layer Cake, the sorrel filly bred by MJ Farms, was a $135,000 purchase in partnership by Triple R Racing Stables LLC., Denis and Julie Schoenhofer, Kim Middleton and Wallace Lynn Landrum at the Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Yearling Sale in August 2023. She went straight to training with JJ Gonzales III and began building a foundation for the big dreams of future success that the team had for her.

Layer Cake (Eye Am King - Tangled Vines by Dash Ta Fame), a race winner herself, is the half sister to multiple graded stakes winners including: Pick Your Pour and Rex Hill. Her personal victories include a first place finish at both the Mountain Top Futurity Trials in May 2024 and the New Mexico State Fair Futurity Trials in September 2024. In July, Layer Cake finished second at the Zia Futurity Trials and most recently placed third at the New Mexico State Fair Futurity (GR. 2).

With a lifetime best speed index of 93 and earnings of $153,151, Layer Cake will enjoy a rest from training and will return in 2025 for her derby year as a seasoned visitor to the winner's circle.

Bad King, the sorrel gelding, also bred by MJ Farms, was a $65,000 purchased in partnership by Triple R Racing Stables, LLC., Nove Racing LLC., Antionette Gonzalez and Patricio Venzor at the Ruidoso New Mexico Bred Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred Yearling Sale in August 2022.  As with most of Triple R Racing’s horses, Bad King went to training with JJ Gonzalez III.

Bad King (Eye Am King - Start Somethin Bad by Pappasito), has a LTE of $282,306 with 11 starts and three first place finishes.  Bad King, a half brother to Layer Cake, is also a half brother to Doing Something Good with LTE of $363,681.

Bad King’s victories include a first place finish at the Zia Futurity Trials, New Mexico State Fair Futurity and most recently at Zia park in November 2024.

As with all sports, there comes an end to all seasons and Bad King’s season with Triple R Racing is coming to a close as he is consigned to the Heritage Place Mixed Winter Sale in January 2025.  He’s been a valuable performer and the Riveras are excited to see where his next season begins.
